Sunday School: Godly Play

The heart of our Sunday School program is Godly Play. Godly Play is a Montessori-based method of Christian education and spiritual formation for children. Through storytelling, silence, wonder questions, and art response, children encounter the language of our tradition - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - and become more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives.

A Godly Play room is set up with the stories and art materials on low shelves. Children are greeted by a teacher and encouraged to get ready - quiet and focused - before joining the circle. When everyone has gathered, the storyteller tells the story and leads the wondering time. Children may then respond to the story with art, or by working with the story materials. Then they re-gather for the feast (crackers and juice) and prayers. Finally, they are dismissed with a blessing and sent with their teachers to join the rest of the congregation for the passing of the peace and the eucharist.

Godly Play Sunday school is in session from September to May. During the summer, we offer six weeks of summer Sunday school in the Fortune Room. The summer session begins July 13, 2008.
