Sunday School
The heart of our Sunday school program is Godly Play, a Montessori-based method of Christian education and spiritual formation for children. Through storytelling, silence, “I wonder” questions with art responses, children encounter the language of our tradition—parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action—and become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives.
A Godly Play room is set up with the stories and art materials on low shelves. Children are greeted by a teacher and encouraged to get ready—quiet and focused—before joining the circle. When everyone has gathered, the storyteller tells the story and leads the wondering time. Children may then respond to the story with art, or by working with the story materials. They are dismissed with a blessing and sent with their teachers to join the rest of the congregation for the passing of the peace and communion.
Godly Play Sunday school is in session from September to May. During the summer, we offer six weeks of Sunday school in the Fortune Room. Nursery care is 9 to 11:30 am for children age 3 and under. Sunday school begins at 10 am.
We offer classes for children and youth ages 3 through grade 7. Age groupings in each class vary from year to year on a two-year cycle as children move through the program, but themes remain the same.
Contact the director of children’s ministries if you have questions about which class is right for your child. And find out which class is right for your child.
