Ensemble Voltaire: J.S. Bach: Musical Offering
In 1747, King Frederick the Great of Prussia gave Johann Sebastian Bach a complex melody of his own invention and challenged Bach to come up with a fugue using his theme. Bach did more than that; a few months later, he presented the king with a collection of ricercares, canons, fugues, and a trio-sonata. His “musical offering” is one of the masterpieces of Western classical music.
